My technique, "Material Matrix", is inspired by the painter, Chuck Close. It involves using a gridded photograph and interpreting each 2-inch square into fabric, using piecing to achieve the effect.

My lecture, "Material Matrix and the Paths Taken", is an overview of the evolution of Material Matrix and how it works, along with my colorful visual journey that brought me to this technique.

The workshop can be taught in a variety of time frames, from 1-5 days. I strongly recommend at least 2 days in order for students to fully grasp the technique. In the workshop, in addition to the technique, I teach: what makes a good photo to use, color and value, curved-piecing, and how to grid your own photo. Everyone in the class works on the same project, picking from "Sew Ready", "Wake Up Cup" or "Junior Cardinal". See below for photos. For a smalI fee I provide a template and handouts so the pieces can be finished at home with confidence.

For those who have taken one of the classes before or are new to it and are willing to try a simple subject, I teach a 5-day workshop every September at Zephyr Point with my group, Artistic Alchemy. This is a wonderful opportunity to work on your own photo in a more intensive and rewarding atmosphere in beautiful Lake Tahoe, NV.See info at the bottom of my "Teaching" page for a link to that site.

Please contact me for more information or to schedule a workshop/lecture with your group, guild or shop.
